“Australia on the Map” (AOTM) is the history division of the Australasian Hydrographic Society (AHS). It has its own website because the history of hydrography does not specifically focus on the organisational issues within the AHS, the more modern hydrography technologies or its recent achievements, but rather on the maritime discovery and mapping history of the Australia and New Zealand. Its website is also separate because AOTM existed prior to joining the AHS in 2007 at its invitation, when it had its own website.
Before 2007 it was called “Australia on the Map 1606-2006”, as it was established as an independent organisation to help organise, promote and coordinate the many events that took place in 2006 as part of the commemoration of 400 years of European contact with this continent.
This website is a work in progress, compiled and maintained by volunteers. It seeks to provide some databases relevant to the unveiling of Australia and New Zealand to the world and the incremental placing on the world map of its coasts during the17th, 18th and 19th centuries and concerning old theories about their existence prior to that. It also seeks to provide access to some of the research and writings of AOTM’s members and some news on related events.
